The Safe Place Initiative establishes a network of businesses and organizations that serve as secure locations for victims of hate crimes. These locations will display a recognizable rainbow star decal in their windows, signaling to victims that they can seek shelter and assistance inside.
Once inside, the staff will:
✔️ Call 911 immediately on the victim’s behalf.
✔️ Allow the victim to remain in a public area of the premises until deputies arrive.
✔️ If the victim leaves before authorities arrive, staff are instructed to contact 911 again with a description and direction of travel.
How to Join the Safe Place Initiative
Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate at no cost. To join:
- Visit www.pbsosafeplace.org.
- Click on “Join Safe Place Initiative.”
- Complete the short application.
- A PBSO LGBTQ Liaison Officer will deliver the decal and provide brief training on how to support victims.
