Boca Raton, FL — Donald Trump’s decision to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education is his latest in a series of assaults on Florida’s students, educators, and working families. Tax cuts cost money, and President Trump has chosen to demolish our children’s schools and jeopardize the futures of all working families just to give billions of dollars away to his ultra-wealthy friends and tech CEOs like Elon Musk.
Most Floridians believe that every student—regardless of their zip code, background, or how much their family earns—deserves the freedom to learn and receive a quality education. The Department of Education was established by President Jimmy Carter 45 years ago to ensure that public schools have the resources to serve all students.

The consequences of Trump ordering wrestling executive-turned-Education Secretary Linda McMahon to shut down the very institution responsible for ensuring equal access to quality education for all Americans will be catastrophic in Florida, particularly for students with disabilities, students from low-income families, and students living in rural areas. This reckless action will undoubtedly result in larger class sizes, fewer resources, and more obstacles for families already struggling to get by.
Angie Nixon, Executive Director of Florida For All, said the following:
“In Florida, we know what it’s like when politicians put their personal ambitions above the well-being of our families. We’ve seen book bans, attacks on teachers, and funding cuts that make it harder for students to get the support they need. Now, Trump is taking it even further, gutting the very department that provides essential funding and resources to our schools.

This isn’t about efficiency or streamlining government. It’s about dismantling the very programs that ensure every child—no matter their zip code or background or how much their family makes—has the freedom to learn and succeed.
Trump and President Musk have clearly chosen to gamble away our children’s futures and abandon our beloved teachers and dedicated public servants just to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires and corporate CEOs. They may think they’re kings, but they’re not. Only Congress has the authority to fully remove the Department of Education, and our coalition demands that Congressional leaders protect our public schools and fully fund the futures of all children and working families in our state.”
Florida For All is a statewide coalition of six organizations — Florida Rising, Florida Immigrant Coalition, Faith in Florida, Central Florida Jobs with Justice, Dream Defenders, and SEIU — that align across constituencies and geographies to organize our community power and build a Florida where we all have the freedom to thrive. We are the heroes we’ve been waiting for. For more information, visit floridaforall.vote.
